Refined Asset and Ticket Visualisation for GLPI

Geolocation for GLPI

Geolocation GLPI Plugin

What is Geolocation?

GLPI’s Geolocation plugin enables the geographical location of devices and assets managed within the system. Initially developed to enhance ticket location, the plugin has since expanded to GLPI’s Asset Management, allowing the visualisation of equipment locations on a map. This functionality supports efficient inventory and asset management across multiple geographic locations, reinforcing GLPI’s capabilities as a comprehensive CMMS tool.

Some of its key features include:

  1. Map display: View asset locations directly on a map, making it easier to track and manage equipment across various areas, thus enhancing the native Locations feature.
  2. Refining location: Adjust approximate locations of device inventory data and tickets directly within the interface for precise placement as needed.
  3. Location detection: Configure the plugin to use GPS coordinates, which is particularly useful for mobile devices or frequently moved equipment.

How is Geolocation installed?

Installing Geolocation follows the same standard procedure as any other plugin in GLPI:

  1. Download the plugin from the appropriate source.
  2. Unzip the file into the plugins folder of your GLPI installation.
  3. Go to the administration page in your GLPI, look for the plugins section, find Geolocation, and activate the plugin.

Or use the streamlined GLPI marketplace feature.

How is Geolocation configured?

To configure Geolocation in GLPI, you should follow these steps:

  • Accessing the settings.

Navigate to Setup > General > Geolocation to access the plugin’s configuration options and select the types of items you want to enable geolocation for.

  • Permissions.

Go to Administration > Profiles to give permissions to the profile you are using.

Ticket geolocation

When opening a ticket with the profile to which we have given the permissions, the longitude and latitude fields are added, as well as a map where the location of the incident or request can be selected.

This is also visible from the ticket once it is created.

A tab (Geolocation) has been added to the top of the ticket view, allowing you to view all locations assigned to tickets on a map.

Asset geolocation

The procedure is the same for assets, although this will only be possible if the element types have been previously enabled (step 1), the profile used has permissions to use the plugin and on the type of asset involved. If configured correctly, the Geolocation tab is added to the asset upon creation.

At the top of the asset type view, the same tab (Geolocation) was added to view all locations assigned to tickets on a map.
